Post Zero
This is the post before the first post, making a nice list of what’s used on this site. I’m using Wordpress, simply because I want to learn about its limitations and shop around for plugins.
Over at Content with Style we’re using a heavily hacked version of textpattern. I think we started putting things together last year maybe in March or April, and used textpattern 1.0rc (I once tried updating it to v4.0.2, and the current version is 4.0.3, only 14 months after launch). The pain, the horror, of all the constraints, I can’t describe it. I added a comment feed to the site and made the ping service work, but it was really Mike that built the layout and Pascal that went through adding lots of things to the engine to make our authoring lives better.
But here everything is clearly in a replaceable blog-style, and I’d like to keep the coding work at a minimum. This is what I’m currently using:
- Wordpress 2.0.4: Any reason not to go with the latest version? I agree that the admin is a bit bloated, but I think within 2 days I’ve used pretty much all options there are except import.
- 3k2redux rothko theme: Yes, I currently feel that I don’t want to design my own site myself. You’ll surely see when and if I change my mind about it. I’m not too sure about the whole k2 thing. Some bits I like, such as the ajax comments, others I wonder what they’re for (all those style options in the admin area… why?), and others don’t seem to work (hello activesearch).
- akismet (came with wordpress installation): I read great things about it, but I guess it’ll show over time if it does a good job.
- Filosofo Home-Page Control: I wanted to move out the blog to the side, and while this seemed a quite straight forward job (add a home.php to the theme and copy the index.php into blog.php, to use that as a template for the blog listing usually does the job) it clashed with K2. And once again I didn’t feel that I wanted to debug or extend other people’s code. Home-Page Control does what it says on the tin: move the blog out into a subfolder, use something else as homepage.
- WordPress ContactForm: This seems like taking not-coding to the extreme. But hey, I saved crucial 25 minutes, so I could start breakfast early.
